Indian Adult Education Association

IAEA accords high priority to train the adult education functionaries. Since inception it has been organising training programmes for adult education functionaries and public opinion leaders at various levels. 
It organises intra-state and inter-state training programmes for key-level functionaries of Government Departments, NGOs, Universities, Colleges and trade union leaders in different parts of the country.

The Department of Adult,Continuing Education andExtension, University of Delhiconducted twelve days training programme on Research Methodology sponsored by Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) for the students belonging to SC, ST, OBC and Minorities from January 21 to February 2, 2011.

The main objective of the programme was to enable the participants to understand the value of research and different methodologies which can be adopted while conducting research studies. In all 35 persons participated in the training programme. Dr. Rajesh, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Adult Continuing Education and Extension, University of Delhi coordinated the programme.

As part of the training programme the participants visited Indian Adult Education Association on January 31, 2011 from 11.30 am to 1.30 pm and they were addressed by Dr. V.Mohankumar, Director, IAEA. The topic of the address was "Civil Society Organisations and Research".

He said that due to the voluntary character and freedom of expression, the civil society organisations have become one of the important stakeholders in the implementation and assessment of government programmes. Their assessment is given due importance as they are conducted by professionally qualified researchers and generally not biased. Thereafter, the participants visited the Extension Centre of IAEA at Trilokpuri from 2.30 pm to 4.30 pm where they interacted with the trainees of the vocational training programmes and the community members. Their interaction was more on domestic violence and ill treatment of women at home.

Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)/ Project on Improvement of Literacy Education Management in Afghanistan (LEAF2) in cooperation with Indian Adult Education Association organized a 14 days Capacity Building Training to the Literacy Personnel of Afghanistan from October 8-21, 2012 at Foyer Hall, YMCA, Jai Singh Road, New Delhi. The main objective of the training programme was to understand the background, status, challenges and opportunities of the literacy programmes in India with particular reference to Development of Curriculum, Assessment of Learning Achievements, Reporting and Database and to develop Action Plan for improving Assessment of Learning Achievements, Reporting and Database in Afghanistan based on the lessons learnt. In all 16 persons participated in the training out of which 12 were officials from Literacy Department, Ministry of Education, Government of Afghanistan. They were - Mr. Ata Mohammad "Mohammadi", Manager, Planning Unit, Mr. Ahmad Zaki "Saame", Students & Graduated Students Affairs Unit, Mr. Hedayatullah"Hashimi", Distance Learning Unit, Mr. Janan" Mirkhil", Curriculum Unit, Mr. Mohammad Wahid, Monitoring and Evaluation Unit, Ms. Malalai "Ludin", Teacher Training Unit, Mr. Abdul Satar Mirza, Manager, Balkh Provincial Literacy Centre, Mr. Habibullah Satughani, Manager, Bamyan Provincial Literacy Centre, Mr. Moh. Akram Isaqzai, Manager, Nanagerhar Provincial Literacy Centre, Mr. Ihsanullah Musawi, Manager, Procedure (Admin), Mr. Najeebullah Hamdard, Teacher Training Unit, Mr. Shir Aqa Amin, Monitoring and Evaluation Unit. Two of the participants work as National Members of JICA/LEAF2 Project - Mr. Fardeen "Tabesh" and Mr. Ziaulhaq "Jamal" and two others Japanese experts of LEAF2 - Professor (Ms.) Yoko Ono and Ms. Rie Koarai. The academic sessions were carefully planned to include all important aspects so that the participants not only gain knowledge but also able to practice some in their own area of operation. The Resource Persons/Subject Specialists were also selected carefully keeping in view the topics chosen for the sessions. The methodology used in the training included lecture, question answer, discussion, group work and field visit. For the academic sessions the resource persons prepared Power Point Presentations to enable the participants to understand the subjects better. As most of the participants were familiar in their local language, the Power Point Presentations were translated to Dari language by the language specialists in Kabul itself. In the sessions the deliberations in English were translated then and there in Dari language by National Members of JICA/LEAF2 Project, Mr. Fardeen "Tabesh" and Mr. Ziaulhaq "Jamal". The inaugural session was presided over by Shri K.C. Choudhary, General Secretary, Indian Adult Education Association and the inaugural address was given by Professor S.Y. Shah, Group of Adult Education, School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Mr. Ata Mohammad Mohammadi, Manager, Planning Unit, Literacy Department, Government of Afghanistan and Ms. Rie Koarai, LEAF2 Japanese Expert addressed the participants. While Dr. V. Mohankumar, Director, Indian Adult Education Association gave the welcome address, Smt. Nishat Farooq, Vice President, Indian Adult Education Association gave vote of thanks. Dr. Madan Singh, Treasurer, Indian Adult Education Association was also present. The participants and the invited guests on the main table were given traditional welcome by offering colourful handloom towels. gave a detailed information about Afghan Literacy Programme and specifically about Assessment Technical Working Group (TWG2) and Statistic Working Group Activities Progress: Statistic Report - 2011. The participants were taken to Jaipur for field visit in which they had interaction with Shri Shibhu Patwa, President, Shri Rajvir Singh, Director, Rajasthan Adult Education Association (parent organization of SRC), Shri Sudhanshu Jain, Director and senior programme functionaries of State Resource Centre, Shri Gopal Ji, President, Lok Shikshan Sansthan (parent organization of Jaipur JSS), Shri Rajendra Bhanawat , Former Managing Director, Rajasthan State Industrial Development and Investment Corporation Ltd. (RIICO), Director and senior programme functionaries of JSS. They also had interaction with Shri Rajesh Vijaya, Additional Director and Shri Rajendra Mohan Sharma, Assistant Director, Directorate of Literacy & Continuing Education, Rajasthan at the office of Rajasthan Adult Education Association. The participants also visited two villages - Kann ota in Block Bassi and Muhana in Block Sanganer and had discussion with Surpanches Shri Ramdhan Sharma, Shri Vishnu Dutt Sharma (Lata), a few elected members of village Panchayats and field functionaries. The trainees devoted last two days of the training programme to prepare workable action plan in groups guided by Mr. Fardeen "Tabesh" and Mr. Ziaulhaq "Jamal", National Members of JICA/LEAF2 Project with inputs from Professor (Ms.) Yoko Ono and Ms. Rie Koarai, Japanese experts of LEAF2, Dr. V. Mohankumar and Smt. Nishat Farooq.

A two day Capacity Building Training for the staff and resource persons of Jan Shikshan Sansthans, Noida and Ghaziabad was planned and organized by Indian Adult Education Association on March 30 - 31, 2013 in the office of JSS, Noida. Dr. V. Mohankumar, Director and Shri B. Sanjay, Programme Officer, Indian Adult Education Association acted as Resource Persons. After opening remarks by Shri Pradeep Mishra, Director, Noida JSS and introduction of participants the academic sessions started immediately. The first day's session was split into two and the topics delivered were on Vocational Education - An Introduction by Dr. V. Mohankumar and Developing an Understanding about Self-Help Groups by Shri B. Sanjay. After each presentation the participants had an opportunity to get clarification on specific issues/points raised in the general discussion. The participants also had a game to show the need for helping each other. On the second day the first session was devoted to Right to Education which was taken by Dr. V. Mohankumar and the second session was on Right to Information by Shri B. Sanjay. In between the sessions the participants were given an opportunity to play a game highlighting the importance of communication and participation. The methods adopted by the resource persons were lecture, discussion, question-answer session and game. Power Point Presentations were used in all the sessions and copies of the same distributed to the trainees. In the concluding session the participants evaluated the training programme by giving their frank opinion about the topics of the academic sessions and delivery of the resource persons. Vote of thanks was given by Shri George Joseph, Director, JSS, Ghaziabad.

Jan Shikshan Sansthan, Sivakasi conducted two days Capacity Building Training Programme to the staff and vocational resource persons on March 21-22, 2013 in the JSS office at Rajapalayam. Around 30 persons participated in the training. The main objective of this training was to strengthen and develop the skills of the participants in the areas of Creative thinking, Motivation and Interpersonal relationship Dr. Rosary Mary, Director, Department of Youth Welfare, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli was the Chief Resource Persons in the training programme. The curriculum was transacted in the academic sessions by the resource persons by adopting different training methodologies which included games, lecture, group work, question-answer, discussion, role play, power point presentation and personal life experience sharing. The training programme was inaugurated by Shri.N.R.Subramaniaraja, Managing Director, Jankiram Mills (P) Ltd. and Member of the Chamber of Commerce, Rajapalayam. Smt. E.Vijayalakshmi, Director, Jan Shikshan Sansthan, Sivakasi planned and organized the training programme. At the end of the training the participants evaluated the programme by giving their frank opinion on the subjects and resource persons.

Capacity building training for staff and resource persons was jointly organized by Jan Shikshan Sansthan, Kundrakudi and the Department of Life Long Learning, Alagappa University from March 22, 27 and 28, 2013. Around 30 persons participated in the training. The resource persons were drawn from the Department of Education, Distance Education, Lifelong Learning and Women Development of Alagappa University who dealt the topics on survey of target groups, life and soft skills (Life Enrichment Education), teaching training skills, teaching-learning materials, maintenance of records and registers, learners' assessment. The programme was inaugurated on the first day by Dr.K.Balakrishnan, Chairman, JSS and addressed by Dr.S.P.Denisia, Principal, Alagappa College of Education and the valedictory session on the last day was presided over by Prof. Sethu. Sudalaimuthu, Vice Chancellor, Alagappa University. The valedictory address was given by His Holiness Shri Kundrakudi Ponnambala Adigalar, Founder Chairman of JSS who also distributed the certificates to the participants. The participants were also addressed by Prof.V.Manickavasagam, Registrar, Alagappa Universtiy, Dr. K. Balakrishnan and Dr.S.P. Denisia. While Prof. Dr.N.Arunachalam, Head, Department of Lifelong Learning gave welcome address, Shri M.Thiyagarajan, Director, JSS proposed vote of thanks. Dr.R.Rajan, Associate Professor, Department of Lifelong Learning, Alagappa University presented a detailed report of the training programme organized.

Jan Shikshan Sansthan, Madurai in collaboration with Madurai Productivity Council organized a two day Capacity Building Training Programme for the staff and resource persons on March 12-13, 2013 at JSS office. The main topic selected for the training was "Human Skill and Office Management" under which the resource persons spoke on communication skill and presentation skill, report writing and record maintenance, accounts and book keeping, self awareness and motivational skill and team building and interpersonal relationship. The inaugural session of the training programme was presided over by Smt. Hepzibha Beula Punitha Jayarani, Vice Chairperson of JSS, Madurai and inaugural address was given by Smt. P. Natchiar, Chairperson, JSS, Madurai. Others addressed the participants were Dr. C. Muthuraja, Shri G. Subramanian and Shri R. Subbiah of Madurai Productivity Council. The concluding address on the last day of the training programme was given by Shri S. Rajagopal, President, Madurai Productivity Council while Smt. Hepzibha Beula Punitha Jayarani presided over the function. Shri G. Subramanian presented a detailed report of the training programme. Shri Y. Chellappa, Accountant, JSS welcomed the guests and Shri K. S. J. Rajkumar, Director, JSS proposed vote of thanks.

For the study given to Indian Adult Education Association by the M/o Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt. of India to assess the impact of "Awareness Generation and Preventive Education CampaignforthePreventionofDrugAbuse and Alcoholism" in Manipur and Punjab conducted by Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan, Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs, the data was collected in the lastbatchofthreedistrictsof Punjab-Amritsar, Firozpur and Bathinda from August 1-10, 2013. The three member evaluation team included Shri B. Sanjay, Shri S.C.Dua and Shri Jai Bhagwan. Dr. V. Mohankumar was alsowiththe evaluationteaminAmritsar. The evaluationteamcollecteddata from 61villagesin9blocksnamelyAjnala,Attari, Chogawan, Harsha Chhina, Jandiala Guru, Majitha, Rayya, Tarsika and Verka in Amritsar district, 71 villages in 10 blocks viz. Abohar, Fazilka, Firozpour, Ghall Khurd, Guru Har Sahai, Jalalabad, Khuiya Sarwar, Makhu, Mamdot and Zira in Firozpur district and 85 villages in 8 blocks viz. Bathinda, Bhagta, Mour, Nathana, Phull, Rampura, Sangat and Talwandi Sabo in Bathinda district by 
administeringinterviewschedulesonYouth Club Members, Panchayat Presidents/Members, Representative of NGOs, Artists ofCultural Groups, Resource persons and a few addicts who have been rehabilitated or in the process of rehabilitation and their family members. Data was also collected regarding case studies/success stories andvisittodrugdeaddictioncentres. Apart from interacting with S/Shri Samson Masih, Sarbjeet Singh Bedi, Jagjit Singh Mann, District Youth Coordinators of Amritsar, Firozpur and Bathinda the evaluation team also had interaction with Shri T.S. Raja, former District Youth Coordinator, Amritsar, Sardar Veer Singh Lopoke,Chairman, District PlanningBoard, Amritsar, Shri Rajat Agarwal, Deputy Commissioner, Amritsar and Shri Manjit Singh Narang, Deputy Commissioner, Firozpur with regard to the effectiveness of the awareness campaign conductedintheirdistricts. The evaluation team had thebenefitofwitnessingalive performanceofaskitbasedondrugabuse by a youth at Saheed Bhagat Singh Memorial School, Lopoke which was reportedly enacted in almost all the villages as part of motivation during the campaign. The performance was one of the best as the skit perfectly reflected how youths are attracted for drug addiction and atthe endhowthey lose theirlives.
